Tromp L’oeil Murals

Trompe l'oeil which translates to 'trick of the eye' in French, is an art technique that dates back to Greek and Roman times and involves the use of extremely realistic imagery in order to create an optical illusion that the represented objects look three dimensional on a two dimensional surface as they would be in a normal painting.

Tromp L'oeil murals employ the same technique and often depict a window, hallway or door with the intention of giving the illusion of a larger room. The illusion of depth is achieved with the use of shading, deep shadows and artistic use of textures in the painting or design.
